Developer Diary: Umbraco Roadshow Barcelona

25/04/2019 umbraco

Just a few days after returning from my trip to UFD19 in Frankfurt, I packed my bags and headed off on another Umbraco adventure. This time, Barcelona. I was joining the Spanish visit by the Umbraco roadshow an awesome new series of meetups organised by Callum Whyte.

Hosted in Novicell Barcelona office, we had 4 talks: Stephan from Umbraco HQ answering the FAQs about the newly released Umbraco v8, it was great to see some of the details I haven't had a chance to use yet, like dependancy injection and database migrations.

Then it was me with my talk "Umbraco Powered Alexa Skills" where I showed my demo of hooking Umbraco Headless Node SDK with a custom Alexa skill. I usually don't do live demos but with voice UI it felt like the best way to show it off. We even added some new itents, content and code live and tested ... it worked! I also showed how we can re-use code from Alexa Skill to a Google Action.

Yay, I can relax now my talk and demo are done!

After a short break, we heard a case study from Fran at NewShore, it's always great to hear how other people architect their solutions. Then we had 2 case studies on scalability from our hosts at Novicell.

After some socialising at the office, we headed out for some drinks and dinner... and got this awesome picture at the arc de triomph!

Next stops on the roadshow are Warsaw and Lisbon, which also look great! I am super grateful to have been along for the Barcelona stop on the tour and even extended my trip to enjoy some sightseeing the next day... using conferences/ meetups as away to travel and see new places is something I really enjoy. After Frankfurt last week and Barcelona this week, I am feeling like a very lucky wee developer right now as I write this on flight home. A sleepy developer too, I am going to sleep now :)
