Welcome to Developer Diary, a weekly chat to share what a week as a developer is like, for me at least 😊 This week: meetups, learning video recording tools & football.
What's been happening?
On Tuesday we had Ladies of Code Glasgow meetup. We had a great talk from Gosia on creating chat bots... another thing added to the todo list!
The rest of the week was alot of planning for what is looking like a busy week next week! I am speaking at Scottish Summit on Saturday, a talk on "Getting Started with Blazor" so I had to record for that.
Emma and I are running 3 sessions of "Speaker's Academy" next week, encouraging folks to come along and generate ideas for a meetup/ conference talk they could do. Sign up here if you'd like to join us!
I managed to run twice, as was target for week. One of them was even before work... bonus point for that, eh? Done another yoga session via Zoom on Sunday, it's becoming a nice wee Sunday routine ๐

Listening ๐ง
New audiobook: The Manager's Path By Camille Fournier. It discusses the different aspects of technical management and various roles, from individual contributor to senior management.
I heard about a new podcast Single Threaded, it has interesting conversations between developers.
I have been really enjoying "My 90's Playlist', a trip back in time to the music of my childhood, ideal for when I just need a fun podcast to listen in the background.
A playlist of some others from this week here:
Learning ๐ฉโ๐ป
As I was pre-recording a conference talk, I had to use OBS. All of my virtual talks so far have been on Zoom, Teams or StreamYard so I have never needed to worry about this til now! Aswell as learning about sharing screen while including my camera video in corner, I had to do a bunch of configuration on audio. Lots to learn, lots of credit to YouTubers & folks who make video tutorials!
Watching ๐บ
Lots of exciting football games this week for me! We've also been watching Open Goal on Youtube (there is a podcast version too) for a fun weekly recap of Scottish Football.
Umbraco Community Office hours was a webinar this week where the community could ask questions of the team at Umbraco... well done Rachel for hosting!
Goals for next week:
- Run 3 times
- Return to daily yoga
- Drink enough water!
