Developer Diary 2021: week 17

02/05/2021 developerDiary

Welcome to Developer Diary, a weekly chat to share what a week as a developer is like, for me at least 😊

What's been happening?

We had a Ladies of code meetup Tuesday which had a great talk from Jennifer on GraphQL.

Things are starting to open up a bit in Scotland. This week I have seen more people "in real life" than any other week since March 2020. I  had dentist & nail appointment which also involved getting a subway for the first time in at least 6 months. These things shouldn't be a big deal, but in 2021 after a year of staying home... I was exhausted!

Reading 📚

I have started reading Shuggie Bain. I am only about 30 pages in, but already appreciate reading (and hearing in my head) voices that sounds like they are from east end of Glasgow. I know it's not going to be a glamorous view of the city, but important that voices that aren't normally heard are written.

Learning 👩‍💻

Umbraco v9 is out! This is the first version in ASP .Net core, so a huge milestone. I have spent some time playing with the beta, seeing what's changed for me as a developer. For the next 4 weeks, Emma Burtow and I will be hosting "learn-a-thons" to do this as a group. We'll learn together how to work with Umbraco v9, test the beta and hopefully help with what needs documented ahead of the full launch.

Watching 📺

We discovered there was a new season of Superstore available, after finishing all the ones on UK Netflix a few weeks ago we were happy to have another collection of episodes available!

I am Jackie O documentary.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Goals for next week:

  • Since we have a meetup on learning Umbraco v9, I have a goal to build a simple demo website in Umbraco v9!
  • Get outside more (yes I say this all the time!)
